Museum of Beekeeping and Wine Cellar Živanović

Detailed Information

The museum and wine cellar of the family Živanović is an important cultural institution that contributes immensely to the tourist offer of the municipality Sremski Karlovci. The museum of the family Živanović is the first privately owned museum on the territory of former Yugoslavia. It was built with the goals of introducing tourists to the history and customs of the local population, the development of local beekeeping and viticulture and attracting more tourists with a superb quality tourist product.

The museum was founded at the estate of the family Živanović in 1968. It preserves from oblivion, the stories and artifacts about beekeeping, viticulture and winemaking, the development of beekeeping in this area and works of Professor Jovan Živanović, the father of modern beekeeping. The museum exhibits various tools, machines and modern beehives with hive frames designed by Professor Jovan Živanović, books and magazines about beekeeping from the period 1810-1910. The Family has 155 years-long traditions of beekeeping.

Along with the beekeeping business, the family has a long tradition of grape growing and winemaking. The first written documents mention Teodor Živanović and Josim Živanović, who established the family tradition and long-lasting reputation of successful wine-growers, winemakers and traders during the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum exhibits photos of wine-growers with harvest workers, great grape harvests, machines used for production in the 1930s. Old tools and machines, certificates and awards obtained from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929, 1931 and 1933 are also exhibited.

Today the seventh generation of the family runs the business of grape growing and winemaking. Wine is produced in 300 years old cellar, one of the oldest and largest in Srem used by the family ancestors, with the capacity of 60,000 litres. Lack of space for installing modern equipment to expand the production led to building a new, modern winery with a capacity of over 100,000 litres and the wine tasting hall for 100 visitors.

The visitors may purchase honey products, wine, brandy and souvenirs made of bee wax.
